'"Being , Becoming." Diptych. Oil on Canvas. 2014.
A poem, ‘The Rose’ , and the  vibrance of  ‘vermillion’,’ ezmeralde’, ‘ indigo’, ‘jujuba’ and ‘Bleu d’Algiers’ , ( Moroccan pigments, a gift from my youngest daughter, Arwen Evenstar) were the main inspirations for these works. The pigments come in powder form and must be blended with  linseed- and essential oils and ground  with a glass Muller. The process is time consuming, but immensely satisfying to my painterly soul.

"Blue Lorica"  Shell, Bamboo, Cocoyea.Templebells. 2014.     "Black Lorica" Calabash, Bamboo, Cocoyea.Templebells.2014.
   ( Detail.)                                                                                                                                                                            (Detail)

A 'Lorica' can be a Body harness or  a Chant for Protection. Two abandoned  Bamboo Dressforms served as the perfect base for an  elaboration of this theme, which I have continued to develop in other media.

“Spirit of the Goddess”, a series of small, intense, reduced palette paintings, are visual expressions of the feminine principle: the strength and resilience of the earth itself.

“I was particularly attracted to the beautiful, poignant “Spirit of the Goddess” series of Lilian Sten-Nicholson. These mysterious, spiritual and perfectly framed miniatures had the strength of Russian icons, and worked superbly, individually or together.”
Sir Henry Fraser. ‘The Nation’. (Barbados) Feb 2nd,2014.
